Andy Serkis Embraces Live Action As Ulysses Klaue

Andy Serkis Talks Stepping Out of Performance Capture to Play Black Panther Villain

Andy Serkis Embraces Live-Action as Ulysses Klaue

From Motion Capture to Cinematic Foe

In an interview with CBR, acclaimed performance capture artist Andy Serkis discussed his transition from digital realm to live-action, playing the sinister Ulysses Klaue in Marvel's Black Panther. Serkis, known for his groundbreaking roles as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes franchise, expressed his excitement to portray a character in a more traditional manner.

"I've been working in performance capture for so long that the opportunity to do live-action was really exciting," Serkis said. "It's a different set of challenges, but it's also incredibly rewarding."

Serkis' portrayal of Klaue in Black Panther was both menacing and charismatic, capturing the character's ruthless nature while also adding a layer of complexity. He described the role as "a real gift," allowing him to explore a different side of his acting abilities.

"Klaue is a very complex character," Serkis said. "He's a villain, but he also has a lot of redeeming qualities. He's a survivor, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants."

The transition to live-action posed some unique challenges for Serkis, who was accustomed to working with digital tools to create his characters. However, he found the experience to be both liberating and empowering.

"There's a certain freedom in live-action that you don't have in performance capture," Serkis said. "You can physically interact with your environment and with other actors, which can really bring a character to life."

Serkis' performance in Black Panther was a critical and commercial success, solidifying his status as one of the most versatile and accomplished actors in the film industry today.
